Ahwiaa is the main Ashanti wood carving village. The most important production is the stool. Traditionally the stool is carved from one piece of wood with 3 sections: the crescent shaped seat, the central support column and the rectangular base.

The design on the support column tell the meaning and the function of the stool.
Ceremonials stools, as with other arts, are the most elaborately decorated. The state stools act as a spiritual and political connection between the royal ancestors, the current ruler, the state, the clan and the individuals.

 

It is the Ashanti belief that the stool is the receptacle of the soul. Stools are also every item, often used instead of chairs. They range from simple to an undammed to beautiful sculpture representing animals.

Ahwiaa is also known for many type of carving. It’s so Ali Baba’s cave, we can find many nice wood’s items: animals, masks, busts, boxes … Among so many others, animals carving and African masks are very well created and we can find many different sizes, postures and designs.

The third type of products made at Ahwiaa is the drum, The production match wood and leather and represents a specific work.
 

 

Ahwiaa est le principal village de la région Ashanti ou est pratiqué la sculpture sur bois. La plus importante production est le tabouret. Traditionnellement, il est sculpté dans une seule pièce de bois avec 3 sections : le siège, le support central et la base rectangulaire. Le motif du support central rapporte la signification et la fonction du tabouret.

 

Les tabourets utilisés dans les cérémonies sont plus élaborés et décorés. Ils sont considérés comme un lien avec les rois anciens, le représentant actuel, l’état, le clan et les individus. C’est une croyance Ashanti que le tabouret est le support de l’âme. Ils sont couramment utilisés aujourd’hui comme de simples chaises.

 

D’autres sont plus élaborés et le support représente des animaux. Ahwiaa est bien connue aussi pour toute sorte de sculptures sur bois, c’est la caverne d’Ali Baba, l’on y trouve de tout : sculptures animaux, statues, profiles, boîtes,…et bien sûr des masques africains de différentes sortes. Le troisième type de production est le tam-tam de très bonne qualité, mixant bois et cuir et réalisé dans des ateliers spécifiques.
